A brief history of the Sonnenbichl country house
For almost a hundred years, our family-run Haus Sonnenbichl has been offering guests a relaxing vacation in a personal atmosphere.
Almost a hundred years ago, Sepp Knilling’s maternal grandmother wanted nothing more than to build a house on Sonnenbichl, Mittenwald’s sunny hill. In 1928 she was able to fulfill her wish. In addition to the family’s living quarters, the Sonnenbichl house had six guest rooms with running water and a toilet on each floor. A few years later, Sepp Knilling senior married into the family. The new family and also the Sonnenbichl were very close to his heart. In every free minute he worked and embellished the house inside and outside, extended to the mountain and to the side and created a swimming pool and a sun terrace. But the family and the demands of the guests grew.
So in the 1970s, the major renovation was tackled, which generously extended the house to the east. In 1978 the Sonnenbichl was inaugurated and opened under the direction of Sepp Knilling junior. The next generation of the family has also been working in the house since 2020, so that the fourth generation will continue to run the Sonnenbichl.
