The history of Mittenwald
The history of Mittenwald goes back to ancient times. Even today, one can find traces of the Romans who moved from Bolzano to Augsburg via the Via Raetia and later via the Via Claudia Augusta. Mittenwald is mentioned for the first time as Media Silva in 1096. At that time, the people of Mittenwald lived mainly from rafting. The surrounding forest supplied the wood and on the Isar the goods were rafted from Venice in the direction of Augsburg and Nuremberg.
In the 16th and 17th centuries, Mittenwald became an important hub for goods, as the Bolzano market was moved here due to war turmoil in Italy. Even today, people remember this heyday and celebrate the Bolzano market with medieval spectacle every five years.
In the late 17th century, Matthias Klotz and his sons established the Mittenwald violin making tradition. Even today, Mittenwald is one of the most important centers of stringed and plucked instrument making in the world. More than ten master violin makers live and work here, building stringed instruments for musicians from all over the world. For over 150 years, new violin makers have been trained at the School of Violin and Musical Instrument Making. Many historic instruments are on display in Mittenwald’s violin making museum. In addition, the International Violin Making Competition is held regularly in Mittenwald.
Already towards the end of the 19th century, the first fresh air people came to Mittenwald. Many a Mittenwalder offered guests accommodation at that time and rented out his best room to earn extra money. However, tourism did not develop significantly until the completion of the railroad line in 1912. The first guesthouses, bed and breakfasts and hotels were built. The ice stadium, the adventure pool, the chairlift to the Kranzberg and the Karwendelbahn were built. Ski slopes and lifts were built.
Today, many Mittenwald residents make their living from tourism, whether they own a guesthouse, bed and breakfast or hotel garni, rent out vacation apartments or run a restaurant or café. People from all over the world travel to spend their vacations in Mittenwald. They appreciate the Bavarian cordiality, enjoy the lived customs and gather new strength in the overwhelmingly beautiful nature.
